Burger King has arrived in SA. Lesley Mofokeng test-drives The Whopper.

Standing in a queue for ages for a burger at a fast food joint sort of defeats the purpose. But I had a sudden desire for some junk food.

I was on a leisurely Saturday afternoon drive down Rivonia Road from Sandton when I spotted what has been all the rage in town, a Burger King outlet. What amazed me was the queue winding out of the restaurant, all along the leafy Illovo pavement.

It was lunacy, but a determination to sink my teeth in the much hyped Whopper kept my eyes fixed on the counter. My appetite was tantalised and there was no turning back.

I inched forward in the queue for what seemed like eternity. Rolling my eyes, breathing quietly, humming the song playing over the speakers, tapping my feet, avoiding eye contact, sighing,

looking at the distant counter and the menu, wishing I had brought my phone and earphones, and wondering if I locked the car. It was a long wait.

Approaching the counter exactly 63?minutes later felt like going up to receive an Olympic gold medal.

Nothing could compare to my excitement of being told the soda fountain of Pepsi products is bottomless.

It was certainly worth the wait. The Whopper was filling and as a sin meal satisfied my craving for greasy, oily junk food.

The bun is bigger than what we usually get at most fast food joints, as is the patty. The delectable barbeque sauce had me licking my fingers.

Now I have to fight the urges to return. When I do, it will hopefully be midweek and without the tiresome queues.
