The stars of cars

The second take, Cars 2, is filled with espionage and has a mix of racing cars. Even Lewis Hamilton, the British F1 champ, features
as a super race car. Janine-Lee Gordon picks her five favourite characters Lightning McQueen.

Owen Wilson voices

McQueen again as he sports the number 95 on his doors and takes part in

the first World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. Still

the hotshot racer, he has somewhat matured from his rookie days.

has been spending his days in Radiator Springs with his love, Sally, and

has become quite the celebrity after winning four Piston Cups.
Mater convinces him to take part in the international race in Europe, Japan and Italy.
Ramone, the body shop owner, gives him a fresh, custom paint job and he gets his stickers replaced with real headlights.

the race isn’t his biggest problem as he soon realises that Mater may

not be the right teammate he needs to guide him through unfamiliar

The rusty old tow truck is voiced again by

Larry the Cable Guy. Since Radiator Springs is buzzing on the map again,

Mater still performs his duties as owner of Tow Mater Towing and

However, he takes his role as best friend to McQueen very seriously.
They set off overseas and Mater has to get used to the world’s ways outside of his hometown.

then gets mistaken for an American spy and gets caught between

supporting his friend and his new role in espionage. Mater gets a host

of gadgets to help him in the battle against the bad guys. Deployable

machine guns are added to his body along with twin rockets, a paraglider

and a holographic disguise emitter.

Finn McMissile

Caine voices this new character, who is the James Bond of Cars. He

mistakes Mater for a secret spy and all disaster strikes as they try to

save McQueen. He is packed with so many gadgets, Daniel Craig would be

put to shame. Finn was originally supposed to have featured in the first

film, but didn’t make it beyond the storyboard. He did, however, make a

cameo appearance in Toy Story 3 on a poster.
He was inspired by the

ultimate spy car, James Bond’s silver 1964 Aston Martin DB5. He has a

different grille and is a blend of several sports cars from the 1960s.

developing team wanted Finn to have fins, but realised very few British

cars had any except the 1958 Peerless GT that had tail-fins and that

served as a base for the car’s design.

Francesco Bernoulli

is voiced by John Turturro and was chosen for the role as he reminded

the design team of his character in The Big Lebowski.
Francesco grew

up in the shadow of the famous Monza racecourse in Italy. He used to

sneak onto the track with friends and race the Pista di Alta Velocita

bank turn.
Through this, he became an instant hit on the amateur

circuit and soon became a Formula Racer champion. He’s a big charmer,

Sadly, his biggest fan is himself and he’s McQueen’s biggest

rival. Francesco’s design is similar to an F1 car and the design team

gave him Pasta Potenza Rotelli tyres – a play on the Pirelli tyres used

in this year’s F1 Grand Prix.

Professor Z

The Professor is an internationally respected weapons designer and is voiced by Thomas Kretschmann.
He is a brilliant, mad scientist who is plotting to sabotage the World Grand Prix.
However, Professor Z is not the mastermind villain and is actually working for Miles Axlerod.
His design is based on the Zundapp Janus, a micro-car in which the back passengers sit in the opposite direction.
The Professor’s licence plate is BAD GA 58, which is supposed to mean “bad guy”.
Although he is a simple-looking car, his cutest feature is the little monocle he wears.
