There is something about how President Jacob Zuma set up the arms deal commission that has just knocked the wind out of the sails of the arms deal critics.

Firstly, Paul Hoffman left the commission weeping after failed attempts to nail Thabo Mbeki for his role in the deal. This week, it was the turn of Terry Crawford-Browne, who, when asked for proof of his claims, resorted to more outlandish ones.

By the time Judge Willie Seriti and the many lawyers presented were finished with him, he was pitiable. Gedleyihlekisa!

A rat’s tale

It’s good to see that MacBuffalo brought with him lessons from the Mountain Kingdom. Addressing the ANC Gauteng conference last week, he said our subjects in the 10th province, Lesotho, had told him the story of Lesasabudi, the rat that eats itself and tears itself apart.

The ANC, he said, should not become the new Lesasabudi.

There was applause from the few delegates who stayed awake long enough to listen to this gripping story. Maybe next time he must learn from his boss Msholozi and just sing!

Indaba’s the word

How many indabas, makgotlas and consultative forums do you need to plan for the next bosberaad? Quite a few, it seems. This week saw a meeting of the Joburg Indaba, which discussed the country’s mining situation. The Joburg leg follows the Cape Town Mining Indaba earlier this year, and the Mining Lekgotla two months ago.

At the same time, President Jacob Zuma was hosting the Mining Sector National Consultative Forum at his guesthouse in Pretoria. One of the resolutions from the president’s forum was to convene a labour indaba at a later stage. Phew!
