They drink to get drunk and see no reason why not to

2011-06-11 17:21

Do you participate in risky behaviour when you’re drunk?
Rami Muroa (21): Nah, the riskiest thing I’ve done is have the driver pull over on the freeway.

I’m normally with my friends so risky behaviour isn’t usually an issue.

The whole point of drinking is so you can eventually pass out anyway!

Allanton Solomons (21):
I never have unsafe sex but I have walked on a high balcony to get to the other side of the flat.

We had been drinking all day and it was fun until I realised that if I fell, everyone would laugh at me.

So you never have unsafe sex while drunk?
Thabo Mohare (22): Well, we all know that condoms are mandatory now, so you’ll stop at a garage to buy them no matter how drunk you are.

Solomons: I feel it’s just disrespectful to expect me to have sex without a condom. Just because I’m a hot
mess and drunk doesn’t mean I’m easy.

Have you had any run-ins with the police?
Solomons: I don’t know any vernac (vernacular language) and I’m a student whose English is polished, so when they stop us I just keep quiet because the cops will just make your life difficult.

Ntsoaki Masoeu (21): I was arrested once for drinking in public. It was non-negotiable, they just threw us into the van and took us to Brixton police station.

Shoo, I cried all night.

But that didn’t change anything about my nightlife and alcohol.

I just brushed it off.

Muroa: Even when they do stop you, all they want is money. The chances of them locking you up are very slim unless you are cocky.

So just give them money and drive on.

Do you include money for a bribe in your night out budget plan?
Muroa: No matter how motherless drunk you are, you never consider the cops might stop you.

Maybe if I had my own car it would be different because I’m a law student and can never practise law if I have a criminal record.

What has been your most expensive bill on a night out?
Masoeu: At a News Cafe, four of us had a R1?500 bill and I was not even drunk from those stupid cocktails.

I was so angry!

Mohare: About five of us went to Coffee in Rosebank and had a bill of R4?500.

We were supposed to have lunch but when we got there it was just cocktails, Jägermeister, shooters, tequila and cigarettes.

It just got crazy.

Would you say you have a drinking problem?
Muroa: Look, I drink juice when I’m thirsty, eat food to get full and drink alcohol to get drunk.

I can’t go out just to have one glass of wine.

I’ll only leave when I’m drunk or broke.

Solomons: I don’t have a problem, I’m a social person and without drinks I’m still as good as I am.

Mohare: I don’t have a problem.

I know when to stop and mostly during the week I don’t drink ... oh wait, that’s a lie.

But still, I can control it.

It’s not like a drug.
