Thousands of motorists charged for road offences in one month

2010-11-10 09:11

KwaZulu-Natal traffic officials nabbed 29 469 people for various offences, including drunken driving, last month, MEC Willies Mchunu has said.

A total 212 925 motorists were searched during the same month, he told a media briefing in Durban today.

Mchunu said: “KwaZulu-Natal had to contribute 170 000 to the one million cars searched last month.

We pride ourselves for the good work done by our traffic officers because we have exceeded our target.”

It was regrettable that many motorists were found driving without drivers’ licences, not wearing seat belts, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Mchunu said the number of people charged could have been much higher if road blocks had been conducted in more roads.

“We believe that there are many people out there who drive under the influence of alcohol. We will intensify our road blocks.”

He said 169 525 motorists had been tested for alcohol and 49 charged for driving under the influence.

Officers had also taken 816 vehicles off the road for being unroadworthy.

“We believe that in most cases human error and reckless driving contributed to the number of fatalities,” Mchunu said.

KwaZulu-Natal had 70 crashes resulting in 104 fatalities in last month.

Of the fatalities 44 were drivers, 44 passengers, and 31 pedestrians.

“This then tells you that if the mindset of the motorist does not change we are heading for dark Christmas holidays.”

Mchunu announced: “We are going to visit taxi ranks in particular to engage with drivers and long-distances buses to appeal for a peaceful and accident-free festive season.”
