Three South Africans narrowly escape Indonesian tsunami

2010-10-29 09:03

gThree South Africans on a surfing trip to Indonesia narrowly missed being caught up in the tsunami that hit the coast of Sumatra in the west of the country on Monday, Die Burger reported today.

Barnie Smith and Burger van der Walt from Durbanville, Cape Town, and Francois Smuts from Stellenbosch, all aged 32, were on a boat when the tsunami hit the island.

The swell passed underneath them on its way to the coast.

“They’re on a boat near Padang in the west of Sumatra at the moment, but they’ll catch a flight from Jakarta back to Spain,” Ben Smith, Barnie’s father, told Die Burger yesterday.

They should arrive in Palma tomorrow.

Meanwhile, they said the situation was “very bad” after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which struck 78km west of South Pagai, caused the tsunami. More than 400 people have died and more than 500 are missing.
