Three workers were killed and two injured in a freak factory accident at an engineering company west of Johannesburg.

“A very big piece of metal broke loose and flew through the factory. It cut open three employees’ heads and stomach.

“The three died on the scene. It’s horrible,” said Peter Madigoe, Metal and Electrical Workers’ Union of SA sector coordinator.

The accident happened at midday yesterday at Mainline Engineering in Roodekop near Leratong hospital on Gauteng’s West Rand.

Johannesburg emergency management services spokesperson Nana Radebe confirmed the accident.

“Three people were killed, and we took two other people to hospital,” Radebe said.

Police did not have information on the accident.
