Three favourites for Bok coach

Three possible candidates have apparently been identified as the successor to Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

Top officials at SA Rugby confirmed to Sport24 that Rassie Erasmus, Allister Coetzee and Gert Smal are the three favourites to take over from De Villiers as Springbok coach.

Reliable sources also confirmed that current Springbok Sevens coach, Paul Treu, is the favourite to become the Boks’ new backline coach.

The new Springbok coach will likely only be named next year as De Villiers’s contract expires at the end of the year.

De Villiers said after South Africa’s 11-9 Rugby World Cup quarterfinal loss to Australia that he thinks his time as coach will come to an end.

“I think so,” he said.

“It was a brilliant journey ... There’s a time to come and a time to go. So I think the journey for me is over,” De Villiers told Reuters.

Erasmus is currently the senior professional coach at Western Province (WP) and the Stormers and was also the Boks technical advisor at the World Cup.

Coetzee, the current WP coach, told Die Burger he knows nothing about who the next coach will be.“As far as my knowledge goes, nobody has been approached for the job yet,” said Coetzee.

Bok vice-captain Victor Matfield told Sport24 upon the Boks’ arrival from New Zealand yesterday that Coetzee would be the ideal candidate for the job.
