Three killed in N14 minibus crash

The death toll in a taxi crash on the N14, northwest of Johannesburg, had risen to three, paramedics said today.

“Initially, a man and a woman were killed in the incident. Their bodies were cut free from the mangled wreckage of the taxi by firefighters using the jaws of life and other hydraulic rescue equipment,” said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks.

“A critically injured woman’s condition deteriorated drastically before she could be airlifted from the scene. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the woman, but sadly their attempt was unsuccessful and she was declared dead at the scene.”

The accident occurred on the Krugersdorp bound carriageway near the Lanseria road offramp at 6.30am.

“All indications are that the fully laden minibus had been travelling in the direction of Krugersdorp when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which pushed through a grassed centre median and into the oncoming carriageway, narrowly missing east-bound vehicles,” said Wicks.

Several patients were airlifted to hospital.

“It is thought that 15 people were injured, three of them critical. All barring the driver of the taxi, who sustained minor injuries, were seriously hurt,” said Wicks.
