Team South Africa put behind a disappointment of crashing in the triple jump and 200m qualifying rounds with three medals at the ongoing IAAF World Championships.

Javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen picked up a bronze in the women’s final with a new African mark of 68.58m, finishing behind world record holder Barbora Spotakova of Czech Republic (71.58) and Maria Abakumova of Russia (71.99).

Hurdler LJ van Zyl collected his second medal of the competition in the men’s 4x400m relay to send South Africa joint 13th with Cuba on the medal standings, two days before the conclusion of the event.

The Tuks Athletics Club athlete had won bronze in the men’s 400m hurdles a day earlier, and he added a silver to his collection in the relay race.

Young long jumper Luvo Manyonga also gave an excellent display in the long jump final to finish fifth overall in just his first appearance at the senior level.

Caster Semenya is also tipped to win a medal in the women’s 800m final on Sunday after her season best of 1:58.08 in the semifinals.
