The Communications Workers Union (CWU) and the National Association of Manufacturers in Electronic Components (Namec) have thrown their weight behind controversial SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

The newly formed Hlaudi Motsoeneng Coalition told the media in Joburg today that the Public Protector’s report, which found, among others, that Motsoeneng had lied about his qualifications when he was appointed at the SABC, was a politically motivated smear campaign, spearheaded by the DA.

The coalition also labelled Public Protector Thuli Madonsela a messenger of the DA.

Secretary of the CWU in KwaZulu-Natal Thami Mzileni said Madonsela was being used by the DA for their mischievous political agendas and he challenged her to prove him wrong.

“Looking at the submissions made by the DA and Madonsela’s office [in the report] you would swear they were written by the same person. It’s clear that the Public Protector is being used by the DA and her mandate is to address the interest of the white minority at the expense of taxpayers,” Mzileni said.

Namec chairperson Keith Thabo agreed, saying the findings and recommendation made by Mandonsela had racist undertones, especially on the issue of academia.

“The report says nothing about Motsoeneng’s skills and competency yet it focuses on his academic record, which is irrelevant. It makes us wonder if Motsoeneng is being purged for taking a position on the matter of digital migration,” Thabo said.

The coalition also announced it wanted Madonsela to step down as the Public Protector.

Mzileni said: “The coalition rejects the report released last week because it is not coming from an honest person.

“We are calling on President Jacob Zuma to investigate how the Public Protector’s office is run and what selection process is used to by her office to take up cases. We have taken matters to her office but she has failed to investigate and that, to us, shows that there is a hidden agenda,” he said.

A march to the office of the Public Protector is being planned by the coalition. A date is yet to be decided.
