I heard with shock when insults were elevated to another level by Kebby Maphatsoe, a leader of government who audaciously called Public Protector Thuli Madonsela a CIA spy and accused her of undermining the ANC.

Government is a professional body, hence those in the employ of this professional body have to conduct themselves as such. I believe Mr Maphatsoe’s utterances were unprofessional and contradicted what our government stands for. But I applaud the ANC and government for having distanced themselves from these remarks, describing them as “extremely unfortunate”.

I’m baffled as to why Maphatsoe would make the effort and use such an important podium given to him to rehash Buti Manamela’s rhetorical observation that Thuli Madonsela “is not God”. Our people are waiting for basic services to be delivered to them, not to be told that Thuli Madonsela is not God.

It is most curious that people who are not implicated in the Public Protector’s report, such as Manamela, Thami ka Plaatjie and Maphatsoe, find it necessary to speak on behalf of President Jacob Zuma. Must we remind them that those mentioned in the report are fully alive and have sufficient resources to defend themselves?

If we disagree with the findings of the Public Protector, let’s heed her request by first appraising ourselves with the substantive issues she’s raising in her report. Let us all withhold our insults and wait for the courts to judge her findings.

Mama Thuli Madonsela is not a spy or a secret agent infiltrating anything.

I was bothered and petrified by these allegations that have arisen irresponsibly out of the blue. I think the deputy minister of defence, and other people who influenced and supported this idea, is totally mistaken. He knows it.

That is why he offered Mama Thuli an apology. He must also apologise to the rest of South Africa and America. It is not a good thing to have our interplay with the US ruined by these allegations.

Mama Thuli is a strong woman who reflects the type of leadership Madiba taught. She is a hero and one of the few who understand the supremacy of the Constitution.

She is performing her duty because she is a woman of dignity who works without fear or favour.

Viva, Thuli Madonsela, viva!

Since the emergence of Jacob Zuma as president from the ANC’s national elective conference in Polokwane in 2007, our body politic and public discourse has been driven more by his personal scandals than progressive ideas that can drive our society to greater heights.

One was rudely awakened to this concrete political reality when Kebby Maphatsoe moved at supersonic speed in unjustifiably attacking the Public Protector and going as far as making unsubstantiated claims that she was on the CIA’s payroll. One might ask what was Thuli Madonsela’s sin.

The obvious reason is that she has released a damning report that implicated Jacob Zuma in wrongdoing while building his Nkandla mansion. This Maphatsoe fellow joins a long list of those who have formed a human shield around President Zuma.

This means individuals will go to any length in absolute defence of the hand that feeds them.

Some of us will never fold our arms when men and women of exceptional quality and integrity like Ronnie Kasrils and Madonsela are constantly besieged by a vicious political cabal.

When George Bush attacked Iraq, Nelson Mandela said he was a leader who could not think properly.

The same should be said about Kebby Maphatsoe, whose accusation of Thuli Madonsela is unfounded and stupid because he too cannot think properly. His stupidity is similar to that of Julius Malema, who was prepared to “kill for Zuma”.

He is in the league of Blade Nzimande, who labelled the Nkandla report a “white lie” without telling us that it is the “black truth” that Zuma prioritised a cattle kraal, a tuck shop for his first wife, a swimming pool, a fowl run, a clinic inside his yard, R10?million worth of landscaping, an amphitheatre and a bunker instead of accelerating service delivery.

It is this “black truth” that has led Maphatsoe to be the king of fools who supports Zuma. Call me a baboon, a cockroach, a dog or a snake, this cabal is acting much like Bush, who acted without thinking about the consequences. Maphatsoe has irritated many of us in Cosatu who are against corruption.

The big question is: When are you going to pay back our money, Mr President?
