’Tis the season to be thankful, and celebrate

2014-12-25 08:00

As the year draws to a close, we take a moment to breathe. Mzansi lives at a breathless pace – the news treadmill does not stop, or even quieten down. But we do now.

There is a lot to be thankful for at the end of the year celebrating the 20th anniversary of democracy.

So this editorial is your gift – it does not nag, advocate, opine or rage against the machine.

Instead, we give thanks to you.

.?South Africans are engaged, interested and interesting people who want a stake and a say in how their country turns out as we make our way into the adulthood of our nationhood. That is a great national asset we don’t often enough appreciate.

.?We give. Any survey of philanthropy or social giving will show that South Africans are kind. Community-giving is bigger than corporate philanthropy, which is also significant.

.?We put it all out there. With a vigilant

media and civil society, South Africa is not a closed society. Scandals are exposed. We live, warts and all. This can be exhausting (and embarrassing), but it is another national asset to have a transparent society. We are definitely not North Korea or China.

.?We are a true democracy. This year, Parliament came into its own with the DA’s expanded win at the polls and the Economic Freedom Fighters making a bolshie entry on the political scene. Our institutions work (but must watch their backs next year). The judiciary, with the Constitutional Court at its apex, works, and works well. We are not a make-believe democracy like Russia or Ethiopia.

.?We like a holiday like the French do. So, Merry Christmas, City Press readers. May the good spirits be with you. And happy holidays.
