Titans crush Impis

2012-03-15 08:19

Henry Davids scored a measured 44-ball 39 and Martin van Jaarsveld added a brutal 13-ball 35 as the Titans crushed the New Age Impis by six wickets at SuperSport Park last night, adding a bonus point in the process.

Playing at one of the best grounds to chase totals on in world cricket, 126/6 in 20 overs was never going to be enough. The win moved the Titans to third place in the T20, level on points with the second-placed Knights, but behind on net run rate.

Heino Kuhn (22) started the chased in a blaze, drilling a four and six off Quinton Friend’s first over. Left-arm spinner Siya Simetu (1/36) ended Kuhn’s 11-ball stay when Kuhn chipped one back to him.

Roelof van der Merwe (25) picked up where Kuhn had left off when he hit fast bowler Craig Alexander through midwicket for four and six. Henry Davids joined in the fun when he cracked Simetu and Luke Wright for sixes. Van der Merwe brought up the 50 partnership when he clubbed Impis’ captain Paul Collingwood for six over midwicket.

Collingwood exacted his revenge when he had Van der Merwe caught by Khayelihle Zondo at midwicket. Van Jaarsveld, the master blaster batsman, accelerated the chase by smearing Collingwood for six over midwicket. Sloppy fielding was part of the Impis’ pedestrian performance, with Justin Kreusch gifting Van Jaarsveld and Davids lives in successive overs.

The Titans stuttered a bit when Davids and David Wiese (1) fell in quick succession, but Van Jaarsveld sealed the issue with 19 runs, including consecutive sixes off Collingwood, to seal the deal. Ben Edmondson was the only Impi bowler who maintained accurate lines and lengths, taking 1/11 in three overs.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first on a track that looked a bit worn, Van der Merwe tied down Impi openers Zondo and Wright, extracting wicked turn. Wright cut loose in the second over, hitting two fours and six off Alfonso Thomas (2/22) on his way to a 19-ball 25.

Zondo (9) never got going and gifted his wicket when he mistimed Thomas to David Wiese at midwicket. Wright followed him to the shed when he chopped on an Albie Morkel (2/22) delivery.
Collingwood (29) and Ryan ten Doeschate (39) combined for a 56-run stand, with Ten Doeschate being the aggressive of the two.

The slow run rate put pressure on Ten Doeschate and Collingwood and the former finally buckled when offered an easy catch to Ethy Mbhalati at short fine-leg. Kreusch (0) lasted only two balls when he chipped Van der Merwe (2/11) to Wiese at gully.

Collingwood tried to up the tempo when he smeared two sixes off Faf du Plessis in the 17th over, but he too fell when he was castled by Thomas. Ryan Canning (15*) and Mangaliso Mosehle (4) tried to put up a respectable total, with Canning drilling two fours off Thomas and Morkel.
