Titans cut ties with head mentor

2011-04-21 11:08

The Titans cricket franchise has parted ways with head coach Chris van Noordwyk.

The 40-year-old former fast bowler, who played 36 first-class matches for Northern Transvaal in the 1990s, replaced Richard Pybus as the coach of the Titans domestic team in August 2009.

Van Noordwyk was previously the cricket co-ordinator in charge of overseeing the identification and development of talent within the franchise structure.

During his time in that role, the Titans produced the likes of fast bowler Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, as well as all-rounder Albie Morkel.

As head coach of the professional team, Van Noordwyk failed to win a trophy, but guided the Titans to runners-up places in the SuperSport Series and MTN40 competitions in the 2010/11 season.

The Easterns Titans board released a statement today announcing it would not renew Van Noordwyk’s contract after his two-year tenure came to an end.

“On behalf of the Easterns Titans board, I would like to thank Chris for the passion with which he served the franchise,” said Andy O’Connor, chairman of the board.

“During his tenure as coach of the Nothern Cricket Union amateur team and assistant Titans coach, Chris had the unique ability to identify players who came through the system to play at a higher level.

“We appreciate the contributions that Chris has made and wish him well in the future.”
