A handbag named Lira is part of David Tlale’s latest venture.

“I had to bring it home. Why name it Ashanti when we have our own icons here at home and she is fitting of the title,” he said.

Tlale said he kept quiet about his handbag range until now as he loves to surprise. “The concept for the bags started two years ago as well as designing the samples.”

About the pricing, he said: “We are appealing to both markets (high-end and price-conscious) that we are trying to reach. I mean the most expensive bag is R4 000 as compared to what Louis Vuitton costs.”

The bags have been showcased at airports – to appeal to an international market – but were not officially launched until today.

The Ndebele-inspired bags come in patent leather, in black, white, black and white, as well as burgundy.

They are available at outlets that stock Tlale garments and purses.
