To infinity . . . and beyond!

South Africa’s scientific research output is on the up – excellent news for the nation and the Mother Continent at large.

In fact, we lead the way when it comes to scientific research in Africa, and our scientists produce the most inventions on the continent.

We’re also holding our own against more developed nations.

All this should not come as a surprise.

After all, one of the biggest stories out of South Africa this year has been our successful bid to host the Square Kilometre Array
radio telescope.

This has been a massive boost, although many South Africans are probably still wondering what all the fuss is about. Science, sadly, isn’t sexy for the average person on the street.

So, why should we care that our scientists are streaking ahead with their excellent and important work? Quite simply, because their research matters.

It is this research that has scientists at the University of Cape Town cautiously celebrating their discovery of a possible malaria cure.

It is this research that helps us, quite literally, reach for the stars in our quest to understand the universe.

It helps find new ways to keep our water clean. It may, one day, help us bring the continent’s HIV pandemic under control.

There are gaps and there is plenty of room for improvement, but with the continued dedication of researchers and a hard-working science and technology minister, Naledi Pandor, anything is possible.
