To sushi or not to sushi: Kenny Kunene says...

2011-02-05 17:57

Why do you think there was such a fuss over the sushi saga?
I think the main hoohaa is because Zwelinzima Vavi commented on it and I responded to his personal attack.

After defending your stance, why are you backing down now?
Vavi didn’t play the ball, he played the man. I had to defend my integrity, honour and business image because he made allegations that I had made money from tenders or questionable means.

The ANC Women’s League and the ANC condemned the act (the human sushi platter) and explained why. They deemed it an insult to women and appealed to whoever was engaged in the act to stop. The ANC is my leadership and I listen to them.

How valuable is your relationship with the ANC to you as a businessman?

I was born in the ANC and I will die there. However, I don’t have a business relationship with them.

How has all this attention affected your business and your personal life?
I lost many friends because everyone thought my life was done because Vavi was going to destroy me. I lost some important deals because people didn’t want to be associated with me for fear of what Vavi might do.

But fortunately my business image has grown stronger. This whole issue has promoted my brand. It has shown South Africa and the world that I’m the king of entertainment.

What’s your current relationship with Vavi?

Mr Vavi and I will be married forever because of this. He has done for me what would have taken me months to achieve. I should have bought him a Johnnie Walker Blue or a King George as a thank-you present.

Would you allow your daughter to be a sushi platter?
My eldest daughter has been the beauty pageant winner three times at the high school she has attended. If she tells me she wants to be a sushi platter, why not? She doesn’t get hurt or hurt anybody.
