The two year-old toddler injured during a family massacre in Muden last weekend has died.

Tholinhlanhla “Fika” Mkhize was shot in the stomach during Saturday’s attack which left six members of the Mkhize family dead.

A group of men armed with AK 47s, who posed as police officers, raided the Mkhize homestead in Tshekane during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The toddler’s father Mngeni Mkhize (45), her brother Sibusiso “Lu” Mkhize ((16), her uncles Mhlengi “Tonqo” Mkhize (37) and Siphiwe Mkhize (32) as well as her cousins Sibusiso Mkhize (18) and Sizwe Mkhize (17) were all killed execution style.

Police say the motive of the killing is still unclear as preliminary investigations have not been concluded. They would not be drawn to the reasons behind the deaths. However, they are claims within the community that the Mkhize’s were cattle rustlers.

Zamo Myaka, a family relative who confirmed the toddler’s death to City Press, said the child had been shot in the stomach, leaving her intestines exposed.

She was taken to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg where she was fighting for her life in an intensive care unit.

The toddler’s other uncle, Xhengwane Mkhize, who also survived the attack, is in a critical condition in hospital.

He is on life support.

The toddler's four year-old brother has since been released from hospital after a bullet grazed his chin.
