Top blues acts head for SA festival

2011-08-26 09:07

South African blues maestro Dan Patlanksy will be the headline act when the 7th edition of the Durban International Blues Festival comes around on September 27.

Patlansky, famed for his pyrotechnic electric blues, is still to turn 30 but is already a four-album veteran of the blues scene, cutting his first disc in 2001, and having performed widely in the US, Australia and Europe.

Presently on a tour of South Africa and Malaysia, Patlanksy has played the festival circuit across Southern Africa, and is known as one of South Africa’s hardest-working musicians.

Abroad, he has performed with blues giants including Henry Gray, Snooks Eaglin and the Baptiste family from New Orleans.

During a stint in New Orleans in 2006, his scheduled performance with legendary slide guitarist Sonny Landreth had to be abandoned after Hurricane Katrina hit the town.

He has also collaborated with American harmonica and guitar guru Phillip Walker.

Despite his youth, Patlansky has been signed by Blue Note records, the planet’s premier jazz and blues label, a rare feat for a South African artist.

Other acts for the Durban festival, which Patlansky will close on October 2, include US blues guitarist Liz Mandeville and Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon, who is one his first trip to South Africa.

Local acts include the Tim Wells Blues Band, the East Coast Basement Blues Band, the Baret Blues Band and the Diamondback Blues Band.
