BASIC education deputy director-general Penny Vinjevold is leaving

the department this month.

Vinjevold has accepted the position of head of the Western Cape

Education Department (WCED).

The 55-year-old, who has held her current position since 2005,

returns to the WCED where she was chief director for educational planning.

She taught in Johannesburg, Mafikeng and Soweto between 1976 and

Western Cape education MEC Donald Grant made the announcement

Vinjevold would start her duties next month and replaces Brian

Schreuder, who has been acting in the position.

A staunch supporter of the National Curriculum Statement which was

written for the first time last year, Vinjevold defended the Outcomes Based

Education initiative despite critics accusing the programme of “dumbing down”

President of National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of SA,

Nkwai Ramasehla welcomed Vinjevold’s appointment.

“There are few people who can fill her shoes within the

department,” he said.

He described Vinjevold as meticulous and a teacher at heart.

“She’s passionate about improving education,” he said.
