2011-05-16 07:30

Two more people have died following a minibus taxi accident near Touws River, bringing the death toll to 11, Western Cape police said today.

“Nine people died on the scene, but another two people died on arrival at the hospital. Those two were a female adult and a nine-year-old boy,” Warrant Officer November Filander said.

The minibus, carrying 23 passengers, crashed yesterday morning about five kilometres outside Touws River, en route to Cape Town from the Eastern Cape.

The injured included the driver, who was critically hurt, and three children.

They were taken to Worcester Hospital.

Seven women, a man, and three boys aged 13, nine and one, were killed.

“It is believed that the driver of the taxi lost control of the vehicle,” Filander said.

Police were investigating claims he fell asleep at the wheel. A case of culpable homicide was opened.?
