Traffic volumes pick up

2010-12-27 11:32

JOHANNESBURG – Traffic volumes were beginning to increase on major national roads on Monday, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.

“We are beginning to see a pick-up in traffic volumes,” said RTMC spokesman Ashref Ismail.

The volumes were increasing on the N1 between Pretoria and Polokwane, and the route from Polokwane to Beit Bridge was also buzzing, he said.

The N4 from Pretoria to Nelspruit and to Maputo and from Maputo to Pretoria was also picking up traffic; as was the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban.

Larger numbers of people were travelling along secondary routes.

Ismail warned them to be extra careful and to watch out for pedestrians, animals and potholes as these factors had been responsible for some accidents over the festive season.

He said the higher traffic volumes on Monday could be attributed to people returning home as well as to those now going on holiday, and people would be staggering trips until New Year’s Day.
