Transport boss’s contract won’t be renewed

Gauteng transport head Benedicta Monama’s contract will not be renewed after allegations of maladministration were levelled against her, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said today.

“We also resolved that we will not renew the contract of Miss Monama in view of the seriousness of this matter,” Mokonyane told journalists in Joburg.

The allegations arose from findings in an Auditor-General’s (AG) report commissioned by roads and transport MEC, Ismail Vadi.

The allegations against Monama include her alleged disregard of advice from the provincial treasury not to extend particular contracts.

This included a R3-billion contract for managing and operating licensing test centres in the province.

“The findings [of the AG report] identified systematic shortcomings in the department which allowed for Ms Monama allegedly to unilaterally enter into agreements with service providers without following due process as prescribed by the Public Finance Management Act,” she said.

On receipt of the report, the relationship between Vadi and Monama, his department head, broke down.

“We have thought through all options available and concluded that retaining Ms Monama within the GPG would not have been in the best interests of the people of Gauteng,” Mokonyane said.

Democratic Alliance provincial spokesperson Jack Bloom, on the sidelines of the briefing, said tougher action should have been taken against Monama.
