Trevor Noah set to star in his own US sitcom

2013-11-24 10:00

South African comedian Trevor Noah has hit the US jackpot: he’s tipped to star in his own TV show to be aired on the Fox network.

Twitter was abuzz yesterday with news of a half-hour comedy show to be produced by Overbrook Entertainment, a company co-owned by Hollywood power couple Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith.

Noah, who is currently in London for a tour of the UK, broke the news of the deal in two retweets to his followers.

“Legendary TV & Overbrook Sell Half-Hour Starring Comedian Trevor Noah To Fox,” the first read, before linking to a story by a US-based website, Dead Line Hollywood.

The second was a retweet of an article by website, headlined “Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith Sell Trevor Noah Comedy to Fox”.

Noah has just wrapped up a sold-out South African tour of his one-man show That’s Racist.

He’s been steadily building his profile in the US, becoming the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and doing a star turn on The Late Show With David Letterman.

His US comedy special, African American, is currently airing on Showtime.

The new sitcom is reportedly inspired by Noah’s comedy and life. It will be written by Sameer Gardezi, who has worked on TV hits like Modern Family.

Noah’s sitcom will be co-produced with comedian Caleeb Pinkett, Pinkett Smith’s brother.
