Trial date set for alleged assassins

2011-06-29 09:47

The trial against five suspects accused of assassinating former Mbombela speaker Jimmy Mohlala will only sit in January next year.

The Nelspruit regional court postponed the case today to January 30 and February 01 next year as the court is fully booked this year.

The bail of Finish Mkhabela (31) – a former detective in KaNyamazane who was fired in March for his alleged complicity in Mohlala’s murder – Mabika (58), her son Sakhile (31), and Moses Mahungela (33) was extended.

The fifth suspect, Dumisani Stanley Mhlanga (34), died last month at Barberton Hospital after suffering stress-related complications.

Mohlala was shot dead at his KaNyamazane home in January 2009.

He was fighting alleged corruption related to the R1.2-billion Mbombela Stadium at the time of his assassination.

The four suspects’ lawyer, Slungu Thobela, said he was satisfied that a trial date had been set.

“It’s a good thing that a trial date has been set. The only problem is that Mkhabela has been dismissed from work and relies on the outcome of this case in order to get his job back,” Thobela said.

Mkhabela and Mhlanga had – through the South African Police Union (Sapu) – lodged an appeal against their dismissal.

The appeal hearing is pending.

Mpumalanga Organised Crime Unit arrested the five suspects after Mabika’s other son, Evans, made an affidavit about two years after the incident to implicate them.

Evans’s relatives claim he implicated them to avenge family feuds.
