Tribute to Andries ‘Six Mabone’ Maseko

2013-11-03 06:00

The news of Andries “Six Mabone” Maseko’s death has left us devoid of a valuable human being who left an indelible mark on South African football.

He joined Moroka Swallows in 1973 and with his God-given talent, provided joy to millions until the mid-eighties.

He played alongside the likes of Welcome “Star Black” Jama, Lucky Oganne, James “Akulalwa” Mabena, Finky “Mathousand” Sekete, Lovemore Mabaso, Alfred “KK” Lentsoane, Daniel “Vader” Mophosho, John “Special” Makhubu, Jonas “Paradise” Sello, and others.

This was a formidable Moroka Swallows Big XV side, among the greatest teams of the time, and we are yet to see stronger Swallows.

Maseko is rated among the greatest players of that era.

Some of his most memorable goals came in the 1975 BP Top 8 final, when Swallows beat Kaizer Chiefs and he scored one of the goals.

He netted two goals in the thrill-a-minute 1980 Mainstay Cup semifinal against the same Chiefs that ended in a 5-5 draw before Swallows won the replay 3-2 and he scored again.

One of the most remarkable goals scored in SA soccer history was a long-range strike from beyond the centre which he scored against Peter Balac.

Maseko was to score again in the final that Swallows lost 3-2 to Orlando Pirates, in a match that was to go on to be voted “match of the decade”.

Maseko may not have made millions of rands during his time – just like most of his peers from that era – but he surely won millions of hearts with his silky skills. He will be remembered for his sacrifices and for bringing joy to a myriad soccer followers.

To those who never saw him play, Maseko was in the mould of today’s Cristiano Ronaldo with power, pace and shooting his trademarks.

May his soul rest in peace and may God comfort his family.

Yasithela i “Six Mabone”! Hamba kahle, Panyaza.
