Tributes to Junior ‘Mohlomphehi’ Motsei stream in

2012-09-15 19:41

City Press was inundated with messages of condolences following the untimely death of Boxing Correspondent Junior Motsei. Here are some of them

Boxing South Africa chief operations officer Loyiso Mtya said: “This week, family and friends of Junior Motsei lost a father, brother and a friend.

“I lost a friend. But believe me, boxing is the biggest loser because it lost a guardian, a historian and most of all, a friend. May God bless his soul.”

» Three-time world champion Lehlohonolo “Hands of Stone” Ledwaba said: “I am truly saddened by the death of Junior Motsei. He was more than a friend, an amazing person and always kind.

“He would laugh out loud and suddenly keep quiet as if he had never laughed. His style of writing always make you look for a dictionary because he used big, colourful words in his reporting!

“I have kept a number of some of the articles he wrote about me.

Bro Junior’s passing on will not only leave a void in our lives but the hearts of everyone who knew him. His memory will always remain deep within my heart.

“My sincere thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

» Golden Gloves Promotions boss Rodney Berman said: “As small in stature, so large in life. His turns of phrase (where he thought them up!) And his laugh. Only One Junior Motsei. So sad to give him his final count before September 22 during a tournament he was so excited about. He will be sorely missed.”

» Showtime Boxing Promotions boss Mbali Zantsi and team commented: “It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Bhut Junior Motsei, who has played a tremendous role in our development in sport and as a people.

“We are devastated beyond measure to learn of his untimely death. We however want to celebrate the purposeful life that he led.

"He has made champions and boosted our morale through his pen and paper, coupled with the vast knowledge and passion he had for the sport of boxing, without compromising the facts and the values of City Press.

“We will miss his laughter, loud and genuine, and the fascination he had with English as a language and his command of the language (even though we never admitted to not understanding the meaning of most of the words and having to consult the Oxford dictionary to fully comprehend at times).

“I am “Don Queen” because he gave me that name after realising what I was really about in boxing.

“May God Bless your soul.”

» Businessman and former boxing business manager Butityi Konki said, “I was floored when I received an SMS informing me of Junior Motsei’s untimely death.

“I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.

“His passing will not only leave a void at City Press, but in the hearts of everyone who knew him. I pray for his soul to rest in peace and for his family to regain strength after this.”

» South African Matsushima branch chief Shihan Peter “Poison” Thage: “We as karatekas are saddened by the loss of Mr Motsei, who was like a mentor to the sport of karate. We will always miss his contribution to our sport which he understood so well.

“As a nation, we will miss his humorous writing about sport. To his family we send condolences and as karatekas we will always have him in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.”

» City of Ekurhuleni executive mayor Mondli Gungubele wrote: “God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that brings tragedy. The City of Ekurhuleni, the boxing fraternity, the family, City Press, friends and the entire nation has lost a brave journalist in Junior Motsei.”
