2010-04-02 08:28

One person was killed and another 11 injured when a truck collided

with a stationary taxi on the side of the N3 between Balgowen and Lions River on

Friday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

“It is believed that the taxi had suffered mechanical problems, and

was at a standstill on the side of the highway,” said ER24 spokesperson Victoria

“A horse and trailer truck, carrying bags of polystyrene balls,

then allegedly side swiped the taxi. The ER24 paramedics on the scene described

the taxi to look like a tin can that had been ripped open.”

The truck then lost control and rolled down a 60m embankment before

coming to rest on its roof.

The driver of the truck was seriously injured and was only pulled

from the wreckage after two hours of efforts by rescuers.

Ten people from the taxi were injured in the accident, two of them

seriously in the accident which happened shortly after midnight.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is being conducted

by police.
