Tshabalala inquiry delayed again

2014-11-18 16:42

The parliamentary inquiry into SABC board chairperson Ellen Tshabalala’s allegedly fraudulent academic qualifications has again been postponed.

The inquiry returned to parliament after an interdict filed by Tshabalala against the investigation into her qualifications was denied by the Western Cape High Court last week.

But no progress was made today when members of the communications portfolio committee met both to continue the inquiry and to decide on MDDA (Media Development and Diversity Agency) board member appointments.

Neither Tshabalala nor her representatives were present.

Sekoetlane Phamodi of the SOS Coalition, a group of civil society organisations, told City Press the meeting was interrupted so the committee could decide whether journalists and the public should be present.

“I walked in with another journalist and the members of the committee noticed that the public were now in the meeting,” said Phamodi.

“They started saying that they’re aware that the media are here and we allow the media in here because this is what we do and we want people to know what is going on but on this one there is the potential for problems because the media will announce to everyone, ahead of us, who the new (MDDA) board member will be and that’s wrong.”

Eventually the meeting went ahead with journalists and the public present, but the inquiry into Tshabalala’s qualifications didn’t go ahead.

It will need to resume before Parliament closes for business next week.
