Tshwane appoints contract grave diggers

2013-04-06 17:11

The Tshwane metro council has appointed a contractor to manage the digging of graves in the city’s cemeteries, the National Funeral Director’s Association (NFDA) has said.

“The interim contractor was appointed yesterday (Friday) after the court order was granted on Thursday,” NFDA regional chairwoman Elsabe Basilio said.

“We do not think there will be a problem with digging graves this weekend or going forward until a permanent contractor is appointed.”

The NFDA approached the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday with an urgent court order to force the metro to hire grave diggers after the metro’s contract with gravediggers expired at the end of March, Basilio said.

The city had not paid the existing contractor for several months, she added.

Yesterday, Beeld reported that, since the end of March, many bereaved relatives have had to dig graves for their deceased because the city’s gravediggers had been on strike.
