Tshwane using ‘zero-tolerance’ approach in evictions

2014-12-12 12:20

Tshwane metro police officers are conducting an operation in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, to remove land invaders.

“The land invasion unit started evicting the illegal occupants this morning at 8.30am and will remain on site until the situation is stabilised,” spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.

“The department will use a zero-tolerance approach in addressing this unacceptable behaviour.”

Residents resisted as officers were trying to demolish the structures. They threw stones at the officers who in turn retaliated by firing rubber bullets. More than 100 shacks were demolished.

Mahamba said officers would be on high alert and patrol other invasion hot-spot areas. Should the need arise, resource reinforcements would be allocated and sent to the area to control the situation.

“It is suspected that an instigator is influencing and misleading the community to commit this illegal act; therefore education and awareness initiatives will be implemented to inform the public about illegal land possession,” said Mahamba.
