Tshwane vs Soweto – knockout round two

2012-08-24 14:30

It is round three between Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United tomorrow night at Orlando Stadium.

After playing two consecutive goalless draws on Sunday and Wednesday, something has to give tomorrow with a place in the MTN8 final at stake.

There must be a winner tomorrow but it is difficult to predict who will emerge victorious. It is still not easy to separate the two teams.

Pirates – the defending champions – will go into the game as favourites as they will be playing in front of their home crowd, where they did not lose a game for the whole of last season.

But it is at this venue where United lifted last season’s Nedbank Cup after beating Mamelodi Sundowns.

After resting some players in their midweek fixture, Pirates coach Augusto Palacios is set to recall the likes of Benni McCarthy and Moeneeb Josephs to the starting line-up while his United opposite Gavin Hunt is also bound to recall Sibusiso Zuma.

Another interesting clash is on Sunday at Dobsonville Stadium where Moroka Swallows host Sundowns.

The two teams played to a 3-all draw a fortnight ago in the first leg and the Dube Birds would go to the game as favourites.

Sundowns need an outright victory or a high-scoring draw to advance to the final.

What will set them back is Johann Neeskens’ inherent inability to stick to a centreback pairing, a folly that was exposed last week and on Wednesday in the 2-1 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs.

Fighting spirit is something Sundowns have oodles of and they might go for broke, like they did in their quarterfinal.

But Swallows are a resilient side as they displayed in their comeback 3-1 win against Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday evening.
