Tutu says be counted

2011-10-29 14:36

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu today urged those who had yet to be enumerated in Census 2011 to ensure that they were counted by October 31, when the exercise ends.

Speaking to journalists at his home in Milnerton, Tutu said the census was important for future planning and people could still be counted during the “mopping up” period from November 1 to 10.

He had himself been counted earlier by the enumerator in his area, Primrose Maimane, who said everybody in her area of responsibility had already been counted by Saturday lunchtime.

Tutu commended the enumerators, who he said were often taken for granted and sometimes faced danger from criminal elements.

“We do some things very well, like the World Cup and the census,” he said.
