Two Oceans: Budd, Kirsten among 25 000

2012-04-06 16:56

Legendary road runner Zola Budd and Proteas coach Gary Kirsten are among the record number of runners in this year’s Two Oceans Marathon.

Over 25 000 runners – 16 269 (21km) and 9 164 (56km) respectively – are expected at the University of Cape Town grounds when the gun go off at 6am tomorrow.
Said Kirsten: “It’s going to be a battle but it’s going to be fun all the way. I did 60km a week to prepare.”

Budd (45) said: “The Two Oceans marathon has always been something lacking (in my CV). At my age I had to find something new and that’s why I want to run the Two Oceans and the Comrades.

I must be patient and not run too hard.”

Budd and Kirsten will, however, be doing it for fun as opposed to the current professionals who will be eyeing the R250 000 first prize purse for the winners in the men’s and women’s categories.

Defending champions George Ntshiliza and Olesya Nurgalieva will be at the start and so is the three-time Comrades champion Stephen Muzhingi.

While marathon fans can look forward to another fun-filled day at the traditional Easter weekend marathon, rain is expected on race day.
