Two alleged robbers die in Durban shoot-out

Two people have been killed and three wounded in a shoot-out in Durban, police said today.

They opened fire on police on the corner of the N2 and Edwin Swales Drive yesterday afternoon, said Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

He said the five men boarded a taxi headed for Durban in Inanda, but once there, they forced the driver to take them to Montclair.

“When the taxi arrived in Montclair, four men jumped off and one man remained in the car. The driver managed to call the police when the man was busy on the phone outside the car,” said Mdunge.

When the police arrived, the men sped off in a taxi and a chase ensued.

“They then started shooting at the police and our members responded,” said Mdunge.

Two of the men were killed and three were wounded. They had tried to rob a tavern in Montclair, he said.

The wounded men were under police guard in hospital. They had been charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and hijacking.
