Two arrested after police find R3m stashed in their car boot

Two men, one of them a former police officer, have been arrested for the possession R3 million in cash, suspectedly stolen, in Middelburg in Mpumalanga.

Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Hlathi said patrolling police stopped the car for a routine check on the N4 road yesterday morning.

“The officers found R3 million stashed in the boot. A further search of the vehicle led to the discovery of genetic animal material.”

Hlathi said the pair could not explain the origin of the money or the genetic animal material.

“We suspect they are part of a rhino poaching syndicate.”

The men were expected to face corruption and money laundering charges in the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court.
