Two women across time

2012-06-01 14:20

Film: W.E. (Nu Metro)
Director: Madonna
Featuring: Abbie Cornish, James D’Arcy, Andrea Riseborough and Oscar Isaac
Rating: 7/10

Madonna, the original self-made woman, continues to push herself without regard for censure or ridicule. Her tenacity has sort of paid off.

W.E. is a fascinating piece of filmmaking, albeit punctuated with the errors so often made by first-time directors.

There are far too many navel-gazing moments, a few too many long shots and she allows the story to amble along when what it needs is a good shove.

That said, she and co-writer Alex Keshishian have found an interesting way to intertwine the destinies of twowomen from different centuries – Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish).

Wally, a former curator for Sotheby’s, is named after and obsessed with the “fairy tale” love affair of Wallis and Edward, who abdicated the British throne for love.

Wally herself is in a “perfect” marriage to a man of reputation, but in reality it is loveless and often abusive.

When Sotherby’s has an auction of Wallis and Edward’s personal items, she spends her days reliving their affair, something Evgeni (Oscar Isaac), a security guard at the auction house, finds as curious as he does seductive.

So, while Wally reimagines what has been termed the greatest love affair of the 20th century, she embarks on a rediscovery of herself.

This film about two women from different centuries struggling through the realities of life and love is worth watching for a good number of reasons.
