UK man accused of faking death arrested six years later

Sydney – Australian police say they have arrested a British man accused of faking his own death in a life insurance scam.

Australian Federal Police arrested Hugo Sanchez in Sydney yesterday after a six-year hunt.

Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service says on its website that Sanchez and his wife, Sophie, had been living in Surrey when they found themselves in deep debt. Sanchez is accused of convincing Sophie to tell authorities and his employer that he died while overseas, so she could collect his life insurance.

Sophie began claiming on the policies. But the prosecution service said suspicions arose when Sanchez’s own fingerprints were found on his death certificate.
