UK tourist murder suspect to appear in court

The 26-year-old man accused of killing a newlywed UK tourist in a Cape Town township at the weekend was expected to appear in court today.

The man, who lives in Khayelitsha, was set to appear in the Wynberg Regional Court on charges of hijacking and murder, said police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.

He was initially scheduled to appear in a Khayelitsha court, but Van Wyk said the case had been moved to Wynberg.

Anni Dewani (28) was killed in a hijacking in Gugulethu on Saturday night.

She was honeymooning with her millionaire husband, Briton Shrien, who was not hurt by the hijackers.

He told UK-based The Telegraph newspaper that the couple had a “wonderful time” in South Africa.

“What has happened to us is tragic, but you can’t punish the whole country for the actions of two individuals,” said Shrien in an interview with the paper. “That would be irrational.

“On the whole, the people here have been overwhelmingly friendly and caring.

“I think that any time you are away from your comfort zone you have to exercise caution. But I wouldn’t say, ‘Don’t come to South Africa’.”
