UKZN appoints Albert van Jaarsveld as new principal

2014-08-14 16:43

The University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) has appointed Dr Albert van Jaarsveld as its new vice-chancellor and principal.

Van Jaarsveld, currently chief executive of the National Research Foundation, will replace professor Malegapuru Makgoba, whose contract expires on January 31 next year. Van Jaarsveld will assume his responsibilities on February 1.

Van Jaarsveld is an accomplished academic, who has published more than 100 research papers in science and nature.

UKZN spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka thanked Makgoba, saying he had done a lot for the institution. Makgoba was responsible for merging the universities of Durban Westville and Natal to form UKZN.

UKZN isn’t the only institution that’s been on the hunt for a new boss. Rhodes University in Grahamstown is looking to replace Dr Saleem Badat, who resigned unexpectedly in March.

Badat, Rhodes’ first black vice-chancellor, is now heading the International Higher Education and Strategic Projects at the United States-based Andrew W Mellon Foundation.

Stellenbosch University is in the process of trying to replace Professor Russell Botman, who died last month.

In March, the University of the Western Cape appointed Professor Tyrone Pretorius to take over from Professor Brian O’Connell.
