Uncle Trevor wants you!

We South Africans tend to think in silos and often fail to discern general interest over self-interest.

So all our debates are divisive and our goals fractured – either by race, ideology, political turf or naked ambition.

Race equity has made strides, but racial equality is hobbled by old protective networks.

Education is stunted by political turf battles between education managers and trade unions, who exercise rights over everything from how school principals are elected to how the learning day is structured.

Cadre deployment, a laudable effort to change the machinery of state, has mutated into a system of patronage that actively hampers the effectiveness of state services in all areas.

We’ve got to do something if we are to reach our 20th freedom birthday in 2014 in better cohesion and shape.

The national plan handed over to President Jacob Zuma by the Minister in the Presidency for National Planning Commission, Trevor Manuel, attempts to create a single vision or nine achievable steps to make life better for South Africans and to build a successful country.

It contains a profound paradigm shift in seeking to achieve it with an active citizenry rather than a passive public.

Can we pull it off? It’s up to you to ultimately demand that we do.
