An unemployed man from Roodepoort is hoping to turn his passion for vintage trains into a career by crafting exquisitely detailed steam trains out of old junk.

Kenneth Rossouw (42) moved from Cradock in the Eastern Cape earlier this year to live with a relative in Roodepoort, after he lost his home, Beeld reported today.

He said he had always loved trains and began painting them about three years ago.

“I make my trains out of cardboard, wire, plastic pipes ... anything.”

He said it usually took him about three weeks to make one and his standard model size was about one metre in length and weighed 2kg.

The interior and exterior of each train is an exact replica of a real one.

Rossouw said he had, thus far, made about 80 trains, and he had received a few orders, at R3 000 per unit.

“I sell the trains as art. I see myself as an artist ... and I hope to have my own shop one day.”
