Form and function come together in perfect harmony at London’s annual Designs of the Year awards

A Dutch library that’s shaped like a mountain of books.

A glass table that looks as though it’s been sculpted from running water, the ripples frozen to give the impression of constant movement.

Robotic arms designed to help children with muscular problems reach, lift and draw effortlessly.

These are just some of the finalists in the London Design Museum’s annual Designs of the Year 2013 awards.

It’s a breathtaking range of architecture, beautiful and practical modes of transport, furniture that will make visitors to your home do a double take and fashion trends that defy belief.

The Design Museum unveiled its finalists this week, and is hosting an exhibition at which the actual designs, or images of them, are on show.

On its website, the museum explains that the designs can be created by a practice, team or individual.

“Projects are nominated by an independent group of trusted industry experts from four main groupings: practising designers and architects, curators from other institutions, academics and tutors from design schools, and a selection of journalists and writers,” the museum says on its website.

The exhibition runs until July, and the winners will be named later this year.
