Union begins strike at Shanduka’s operations

2010-07-05 10:23

Hundreds of members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have

downed tools at four Shanduka Coal operations.

NUM said the industrial action was a result of the issue of

centralised bargaining. “The workers demand that Shanduka should centralise its

bargaining so that conditions of service can be harmonised.”

The operations affected were Springlake, Leeuwfontein, Graspan

Colliery and Townlands.

The NUM demands that Shanduka give its workforce similar pay and

allow similar conditions of service since all operations fell within one

NUM’s regional secretary for the Highveld region, Paris Mashego

said: “Springlake operation is in KwaZulu-Natal whereas the other three

operations are in and around Emalahleni (Witbank).”

Mashego added: “Our workers have decided to go on an indefinite

strike action after mediation by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and

Arbitration (CCMA) failed to resolve the dispute.”

Shanduka Coal could not comment immediately.
