Union marches against privatisation

Nehawu workers in Free State will march against privatisation today.

The provinces Premier, Ace Magashule, had promised to reverse most of the government’s outsourced and privatised functions, but provincial departments were still renewing private service providers’ contracts, the union said.

“We want the provincial government to outline its plan on how will it take back the outsourced services,” said National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) Maluti region chairperson Montseng Tsiu.

She said the provincial government should look at ways of buying out existing contracts.

“We understand it is a process. It cannot be done in a day, but what plans are in place to undo this?” she said.

Tsiu said that among the outsourced functions were security and cleaning services.

The protesters would assembled at Freedom Square, in QwaQwa, before marching to the Manapo Hospital, in Phuthaditjhaba, to hand over a memorandum at noon.
