Union to serve another strike notice

2010-05-13 07:59

The SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) was planning to serve the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) with a 48-hour strike notice today.

The union said: “There are no attempts that had been made by management to meet Satawu in the last seven days.”

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) issued a certificate of non-resolution last Thursday.

This was after Satawu rejected a 5% across-the-board salary increase offer.

“Satawu is demanding 16% across the board and will be serving a 48-hours notice to Prasa on May 13 informing them of our intention to embark on a legal and protected strike action.”

The strike would start on Monday.

Satawu said the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) would join in the mass action.

Satawu and Utatu were already involved in strike action against Transnet this week.

With some railway operators working for Transnet, Metrorail feared delays today. Satawu said the Transnet strike also affected train services in the Eastern Cape this week.

But labour action against Prasa was set to severely disrupt Metrorail services. Prasa operates Metrorail, Shosholoza Meyl and Autopax bus services.

About two million commuters rely on Metrorail every day.

Transnet operates in five divisions: freight rail, rail engineering, ports, port terminals and pipelines.
