Unions will not be softened by World Cup, says Vavi

Unions would not surrender to World Cup “blackmail”, Cosatu general

secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said today.

“We shall certainly not drop our demands because of the World Cup.

We are the biggest supporters of the World Cup and the greatest fans of Bafana

Bafana, but we will not let the bosses and their media blackmail us into

surrendering our right to take action in defence of our jobs and living

standards,” Vavi said.

He told a Young Communist League jobs summit in Johannesburg that

South African workers were being asked to make undue sacrifices for the 2010

World Cup.

He said workers were being asked to temper their demands despite

worsening poverty and inequalities in South Africa: “Nobody cares about that.

Everybody cares about the World Cup.”

Vavi agreed, however, that there should not be strikes during the

World Cup.

“It would not be in our interest to have strikes or chaos on the

streets (during the event).”

The onus would be on managements to avoid labour action, Vavi said.
