Matsatsantsa a Pitori on a mission to bang in more

SuperSport United are known to be South African football’s draw specialists, but their scoring prowess has been underrated.

Statistics show that United falls into the top four of the all-time top scorers, behind Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Matsatsantsa a Pitori have already set the tone this season with a 4-1 victory over Free State Stars to be the top-scoring side on the opening day of the Absa Premiership last weekend.

United have scored more than 700 goals in more than 500 league matches in the 17 years of PSL.

They also hold the PSL record for the biggest win. This was recorded during an 8-1 demolition of Zulu Royals in the 2003/04 season. A more recent big winning margin was a 7-0 humiliation of Maritzburg United two seasons ago.

Under former head coach Gavin Hunt, United enjoyed a good run of bulging the net regularly before their more recent tendency to draw many matches.

Hunt’s successor Cavin Johnson said he wishes to build on the three-time Premiership champions’ legacy of finding the net at an blistering rate.

“If a team is able to score many goals, it plays better football,” said Johnson, who guided Platinum Stars to the runner-up spot in the league last season. Stars finished as joint top scorers with champions Chiefs, on 48.

Johnson has enjoyed a run of goals in official matches since he took charge of the Pretoria outfit at the start of this campaign.

He is following a similar pattern as that of his previous club, Stars, who averaged two or more goals per match.

“I use reverse psychology on my players. In victory, I look at the negatives and look out for positives in defeat,” he said.

Johnson said he would like to turn the record 17 draws by United last season into 10 wins during this campaign.

United striker Mame Niang has already announced his arrival with crucial goals and assists in all the matches he has featured in. The lanky Senegalese netted a brace against Free State last weekend.

Niang was the PSL top scorer – 14 goals – while with Moroka Swallows in the 2005/06 season. He also won the Golden Boot as the University of Pretoria sharpshooter with 10 goals last season.

United will next face AmaTuks in a league fixture on August 28. This is after they were knocked out of the MTN8 Cup on penalties (4-3) by Orlando Pirates last week.
