Up in the air

I don’t drink beer, so an invitation to the relaunch of Castle Milk Stout held little appeal.

But having dinner 60m above ground certainly did.

That’s how we found ourselves among the 200 guests at Turbine Hall in Newtown, Joburg.

The guest-list included twitter celebrity Khaya Dlanga, Sama-winning R&B beauty Lee Ann, singer and actor Lee Ann, TV personality Mzwandile Ngubeni, and models Pearl Thusi and Nzinga Qunta.

Before taking to the sky, we made our way to the rotating bar for a lesson on beer, including a Pour, Pause and Sip experience. But like I said, I’m not a beer person.

Then it was time to indulge in fine food while dangling about 12 storeys-high with a dazzling view of Jozi’s city lights. While most of the guests were too nervous to eat, some tucked into the springbok oyster starters, the oxtail coquette mains and the dessert of chocolate truffle stout cake.

The 30-minute vertigo experiment came as a shock to those who were acrophobic but a gift of gloves, a blanket, beanie and a scarf came in handy as a shield against the chilly weather.

The board gamers’ club set-up afterwards – where we played checkers, poker and 60 seconds – was a nice touch.

And Zakes Bantwini and DJ Black Coffee had us shaking our Bum Bum later on to ward off the chill.
